Requirements:

  • Secondary School education is the minimum requirement. A three-year apprenticeship or certification in Meat Processing is highly preferred, or it may be required by some employers.
  • 1-3 years of experience is expected, with at least 2 years for Canadian Skilled Worker Visa eligibility.
  • All general and specific requirements of the Canadian Skilled Worker Visa apply.

Job Duties of a Butcher/ Meat Cutter:

  • Cutting meat from bones into chunks or specified pieces as per customer requests.
  • Trimming fat from meat.
  • Mincing and shaping meat into customized pieces.
  • Operating sausage machines to make sausages.
  • Handling tasks like crumbing, seasoning, marinating, smoking, and curing meat (if working for a food business or eatery).
  • Creating small goods from selected cuts of meat.
  • Managing budgets, stock control, and taking orders.
  • Expertly preparing and portioning meats according to customer preferences and standards.
  • Providing personalized customer service, understanding patrons' preferences, and offering recommendations.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area, including meat cutting stations and equipment.
  • Ensuring compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations, maintaining high hygiene standards.
  • Collaborating with team members to manage inventory, restock displays, and rotate products.
  • Assisting in creating value-added products like marinated meats or specialty cuts.
